GROUNDED VS UNGROUNDED

Ahhh... these are terms that are used a lot in energy work, right? There are other phrases used to express these terms, some more colorful than others... here are just a few:

Grounded:
In your body
In your vehicle
Down to Earth
Together (As in, "He's got his #$@% Together.")
Wrapped Tight... etc.

Ungrounded:
Space Cadet
Spacie (I've been called this instead of Stacie plenty of times!)
Light Headed
Medicine Head (I love the commercial that shows this!)
Not in your body
Not in your vehicle
Out there
Way Out there

Well, you get the picture.... being Grounded is basically the energetic equivalent of being connected to the Earth... the ability to move through and interact with your normal '3D' world effectively, the ability to discern when it's appropriate to 'speak your truth' or 'hold your tongue'. This doesn't necessarily mean that you aren't 'in touch' with a more expanded levels of consciousness, but it definitely means that you have the ability to adapt to both the spiritual and mundane worlds. You know who you are... you're the closet Reiki practitioners, New Agers, or Spiritual folks that hold a 'normal job' and that no one suspects that you are 'into' all this 'stuff'. My husband is a great example of this... no one would ever suspect that Richard puts Rose Quartz and Hematite in his pockets every day, or that he's a Reiki Master in Training... or Heaven forbid, that he is the webmaster of a decidedly metaphysical website. He walks in two worlds quite easily... He knows his truth, but can manage to interact with anyone without seeming 'out there'. Richard is definitely grounded... and thank goodness too... I might not ever get anything done without him pullling me back to Earth once and awhile. whew.

Being Ungrounded is the state in which most of us go through sooner or later, especially if we are doing our best to open up to Universal Energies, like with Reiki or other spiritual practices. For those of you who have never been 'ungrounded'... it's very much like walking around town on cold medicine. It is the feeling of being disconnected from the physical world, a little spaced out... ect. Of course, there are times that being 'ungrounded' is a plus, for example, when you are meditating, etc. I usually am fairly ungrounded when I facilitate a healing session... because I get my intuitive information more easily in this state of consciousness.

Okay... so what's the point of discussing this? Well, consider for a moment that we are circuits between Celestial energy lines and Earth energy lines. We are the bridges of these two worlds. How does a light turn on? Well... electricity, right? But doesn't that electricity need to be grounded before the Light actually goes on? There needs to be a good connection to 'Light Up'. So consider for a moment that the term 'anchoring the Light on Earth' also means 'being the circuit' for which the Light can travel. Anchoring Light is the same as being open to both Celestial and Earth energies... allowing the two to merge within you. You are the Light bulb... loosely speaking.

Times of Expansion

Most of my life I had been a pretty 'down to Earth' kinda gal. I was still drawn to metaphysical information, still had several 'out there' experiences.. but for the most part, I was considered by myself and others to be pretty 'together'. Well... just a few years ago I went through what I call 'expansion shifts'. Really, my whole world and how I understood it changed dramatically in a very short period of time. All of a sudden I was face to face with some very tangible experiences that showed me, without a doubt, that I was also a spiritual being... not just a body. This sounds simple now, but at the time, man... I was really 'out there'. To make a long story as short as possible, my psychic center popped open in a matter of a few seconds... and the world around me started to provide experiences to knock my logical mind right out of the Master Seat. My logical mind was none to pleased with the process either...

As I connected with the Celestial/Universal/Spiritual parts of myself (which I'm still learning), did I EVER become UNGROUNDED. I couldn't go into the office without seeing the energy swirling around... I couldn't carry a conversation because my attention kept getting diverted to the other things going on in the room. In the span of one day... I put my hands on two peoples heads that had headaches (before I was a Reiki Practitioner), and their pain vanished... The secretary's dead Grandfather shifted in and started calling her by the name of 'Sunshine'... which, of course, I had to ask about... only to find that her jaw dropped to the floor when I asked her if her Grandfather had called her that. My goodness.... I couldn't keep it straight if I wanted to... I was WAY out there. I mean... I was at the OFFICE!! This was a University... lots of very logical, intelligent folks doing logical, intelligent work... and here I was wandering around in a ~completely~ different state of consciousness.

To me... this was extremely uncomfortable. I felt very vulnerable, very unsafe... and definitely 'out of my element'. It was as if I had taken an entire box of cold medicine and then put myself out into the 'normal' world. It makes me shudder now to think that I was driving around in a car while I was in this state... I was driving a vehicle without being in my own!

What I've come to understand is that many of us go through mind blowing, perspective changing shifts... or, we go from only knowing our physical reality to also knowing our spiritual reality. Energetically speaking... we have opened up our upper Chakra functioning to allow Universal/Celestial/Spiritual flow. When your Crown and 3rd Eye Chakras are wide blam open... let me tell you... you will most probably experience being 'ungrounded'. The challenge is to take this new or opened flow of connection all the way down your Chakra system... down through your body, which is the 'circuit'... and GROUND it to the Earth.

It takes some time to get used to expanded energy, the process of grounding it to the Earth may take you a little while. I probably walked around 'out of my vehicle' for well over a year... then another shift would happen, something larger and more mind blowing than the last time... and I'd be 'out there' again... trying like mad to stay 'in my body' and 'ground it out'. During this time period, I made the conscious decision to basically remove myself from the 'normal' world. I moved to Asheville and quit my job training day care providers... I explored my calling to energy work, Earth healing work, and to remember what the heck it seemed like I forgot. I decided to put myself in the position to be able to explore this new perspective in a safe environment, with people and work that supported the shifts I had experienced. Slowly.... ever so slowly... I began to feel 'together' again... 'back in my body'.... with the ability to adapt to both physical and spiritual, celestial and mundane realities.

Eventually, I began to understand what the phrase "Heaven on Earth" meant... or the process of anchoring our 'Higher Parts' into our 'Physical Reality'. For what else could this be except to become the Light Bulb that turns on at ~this~ level of being... the Light that merges with the other points of Light that have turned on or made the connection. I took me a while to figure out that this 'Ascension' theory wasn't about 'going' anywhere... it was about 'anchoring' the expanded frequencies here... on Earth. It was about 'being' the Light... or the Light Bulb, as it were, and allowing the two worlds to merge within. Consequently... when you connect and ground it out, you are adding to the overall 'Light' of the planet... the process moves forward tenspeed... the frequencies become finer, higher, lighter for ALL. This is the shift that is spoken of in the raising of the Collective Consciousness. The more 'Light Bulbs' that turn on here on Earth... the brighter the entire planet gets, right?

How to Ground

There are many ways to Ground, some less healthy than others. Anything that helps to bring you back into your physical body is something that grounds you... there are all sorts of techniques to do this. Let me discuss just a few that I have used, or that I have seen others use:

Imagery
Nature
Root Chakra Support
Less Healthy things
Imagery

Imagery is the process of visualizing something specific. It is the conscious creation of a thought, feeling, or mental picture. Energy follows thought... and that's why it works. After you read this, close your eyes and visualize this image:

Imagine that you have roots, like a tree, growing out of your feet and deep into the dirt... all the way down to the center of the Earth. Imagine that there is a very bright beam of Light shining down into your Crown Chakra... and that this beam of Light travels down your spine... down both of your legs.... passing through your feet and then traveling to the center of the Earth on the 'roots' that grow from your feet. Hold this visual... do your best to ~feel~ it... the passage of energy from your Crown to the Earth. Maybe it feels warm and tingly... maybe it feels cool and electric.... maybe you feel physically lighter and less weighty... uplifted, but not disconnected from your physical body.

Here's another one, which to me, seems more appropriate (close your eyes again and imagine this after you read the exercise):

Imagine that a bright Light, perhaps golden, is beaming into your Crown Chakra and moving down through your 3rd eye, Throat, and Heart Chakra. Hold this energy there for a moment and create another visual. This time, imagine that a bright Light, perhaps Red or Green, is beaming up from the Earth and into your two feet... moving upward past your Root, Belly, Solar Plexus... and meeting the other Light at your Heart Chakra. Imagine that the meeting of these two beams of Light is like a Union of Light... and that the two, when merged into One.... are so brilliant that the combined Light pours forth from your Heart Center in every direction.... and even travels down your arms and out the palm of your hands. When the Lights come together at your Center (the Heart Chakra is the middle most Chakra).... it begins to radiate OUTWARD. Do your best to feel this flow of energy.... coming from both directions, above and below... and meeting inside of you... at your Heart. How does this feel? Are you feeling both spiritual and physical... are you mellow and calm- peaceful... do you feel safe and happy? Interesting, eh?

Nature

The Earth is the Mother of the entire Natural world. Going out into Nature's beauty helps us to feel more connected, peaceful, and vibrant. Earth energy is really a wonderful vibration... it feels good... it's healing. There is nothing like squishing mud between your toes, right? Well there you go! If you need to ground... go get your feet on some dirt! Hug a tree.... sit under a tree.... take a walk..... lay down on a huge rock.... watch a waterfall, or the Ocean.... stick your toes in the sand and wiggle them around. That's right, get yourself into the Natural World and 'plug in'. Ahhhh... feels better already doesn't it?

Root Chakra Support

We connect with Earth Energies from our Root Chakra, also the lesser Chakra's at the bottom of our feet. When I say lesser, I don't mean less important... just other than the 7 prime Chakra centers... we have oodles more in, above, and below our physical bodies (but that's another story). So... if we can find ways to support Root Chakra functioning, more likely than not, we will also be able to ground better.

We can support the Root Chakra by:

Stones in our pockets
Energy Work

Stones in the pockets...yes, your front pockets..way in the bottom by the crease of your legs... this is where most energy workers place their hands or stones to work the Root Chakra. Grounding stones should be any that are Red, Black, or really heavy. The best Grounding Stones that I've found are Hematite, Black Tourmaline, and Obsidian (Apache Tears or other forms). Put a stone in each pocket and shove it all the way to the bottom inner corner.... just keep it there during the day. This is definitely a good way to help keep you together and centered... grounded... in your vehicle, etc. If you aren't that good at creating imagery... this is a good option.

Energy work is typically 'ungrounding' when used in a full body session... but if you are in a pinch and you need to ground out... try Reiking just your Root Chakra and the soles of your feet. (hee hee, maybe I should type 'souls' of your feet instead... interesting how that works out.) If you aren't a Reiki practitioner... try 'breathing' red into your Root Chakra... just pretend that you are sucking Red Light up into this area (squeeze, then 'breathe' in). Careful though... you may be looking for your spouse soon enough. It also seems to trigger sexual desire.

Okay.... now I've mentioned some of the better ways to Ground yourself... but there are a few not so good ways that definitely ground you, but they aren't really that healthy. I'm mentioning them here because some of you may have wondered why you picked up some bad habits just when you were starting to open up... and I have the answer for that, cause... well, I'm guilty of it myself.

Not so Healthy: Tobacco, Coffee, Chocolate etc....

What the heck are those things doing here in a nice informative article? Well... it's true... all those nasty things that are 'bad' for you are also extremely grounding. I'm not condoning the use of them... but I have to admit that I partake. I felt guilty for a while when I started smoking in the middle of all the shifts that went on... I didn't understand why I had the desire to smoke my brains out, or drink 5 cups of coffee a day... well, no one has to explain the desire to eat Chocolate... that's a given. But... there were times that smoking probably kept me 'in my vehicle' long enough to drive to my next destination without permanently leaving my vehicle, if you know what I mean.

I'm not putting these things in here as a suggestion for grounding... but rather to help those that have picked up these bad habits (which may have seemed coincidental to the expansive experiences) to better understand where the impulses may have came from. Also... when you understand that you may have had the impulse to use these things for grounding, that you can perhaps make the decision to find better, more helpful ways of grounding yourself in the future. Putting on weight is another example of trying to 'ground' in a not so good way... Eating is a very 'Earthy' pleasure. Maybe your body is saying to you, 'if you just weighed more... maybe you wouldn't go floating off into space as much.' Eating root veggies or peanuts may go further than stuffing yourself as full as you can get to ground out.

I would encourage anyone practicing the less healthy ways of grounding (myself included) to do your best to find other, more supportive ways of grounding as you become more comfortable with the process. Although, I know that it's hard to worry about that when you are doing your best to just hold on to your butt and stay in your body. Everything comes in little steps... just keep yourself open to the possibility of finding a better way when you are ready. Loose the guilt, give yourself a hug... and strive to support yourself in the process. Start practicing the other methods until they support you in the way you require... eventually, the other things can fall away.
